1984年ごろの新宿駅東南口は「御大典広場」と呼ばれ、戦後の闇市の名残で不法占用した店舗や露店が立ち並んでいました。治安も悪く、まだまだ戦後の猥雑さが残っていました。駅前の一等地にもかかわらず、地元にとっては「御大典記念碑」の建つ「御大典広場」であること、また独特な土地の形状から再開発がなかなか進まない場所でした。1994年に整備されて現在の新宿駅東南口広場が完成した。写真左に見える石碑が、昭和3年（1928）の昭和天皇即位を記念した御大典記念の碑です。現在は、西新宿の十二社熊野神社に移設されています。
Around 1984, the southeast exit of Shinjuku Station was called “Gotaiten Hiroba” and was lined with illegally occupied stores and stalls, remnants of the postwar black market. The area was not safe, and there was still a sense of postwar indecency. In 1994, the current Shinjuku Station Southeast Exit Plaza was completed. The stone monument on the left of the photo is the monument commemorating the Emperor Showa’s accession to the throne in 1928. It has now been moved to the Twelve Kumano Shrines in Nishi-Shinjuku.
