It is still operating as a Chinese restaurant "Ishi no Ie" on the first floor of the semi-basement. You can enjoy delicious Chinese food with nostalgia for the Showa era. There are no tall buildings on Koshu Kaido in the direction of Yotsuya, and the sky is clear. On the right side of the street is a disc-shaped restaurant on the top floor of the Lashington Palace. This was a famous landmark in Shinjuku Ni-Chome. The Keio Shinjuku 3-chome Building (the white building in front) was the location of Shinjuku Station on the Keio Line until it was relocated in 1945. Until then, the Keio Line ran along Koshu Kaido. A unique photographic archive of Tokyo’s shifting urban landscape—captured in striking before/after pairs from 1984 and the present day.

Victoria Camera Center・Shinjuku Station 1984⇔2025
The “Victoria Camera Center” visible across the Koshu Kaido overpass. In the 1980s, the first and second floors sold cameras, the third floor sold film, and the fourth floor sold video cameras. Alongside Yodobashi Camera and Camera no Sakuraya, Shinjuku was truly a camera battleground. Secondhand camera shops also crowded the area.
Meanwhile, “Nagano-ya,” founded in 1915 (Taisho 4), still operates in its original building.
Even now in the Reiwa era, it remains a precious shop where the spirit of the Showa era lives on in the streets of Shinjuku. A unique photographic archive of Tokyo’s shifting urban landscape—captured in striking before/after pairs from 1984 and the present day.

Shinjuku Station Southeast Exit “Bonita” 1984⇔2025Back when the lingering scent of the postwar black market still hung in the air. Illegally occupied shops crowded the station front, filled with a chaotic, somehow precarious atmosphere. In one corner, closest to the station, stood the private nude booth shop “Bonita”. The Koshu Kaido bridge over the railroad tracks at the south exit of Shinjuku Station was originally built in 1925, and was replaced and reinforced around 2005 to withstand earthquakes and other disasters. The road was widened from 30 to 50 meters without stopping the flow of more than 60,000 vehicles a day. In December 2016, Lumine opened "Sanagi Shinjuku," a food space themed "Asian-Japanese food stall village," in a 900-square-meter space under the elevated Koshu Kaido (National Route 20).
A unique photographic archive of Tokyo’s shifting urban landscape—captured in striking before/after pairs from 1984 and the present day.

The Southeast Exit plaza as it was in 1984. To the right stands the “Commemorative Monument for the Accession of Emperor Showa,” and this area was called the “Odaiten-hiroba” (Imperial Accession Ceremony Plaza). To its north lay a district of restaurants and eateries. The monument was erected in 1928 (Showa 3). At that time, embankments were built to match the height of the Koshu Kaido Overpass, creating a small hill. This hill was leveled in 1994, revealing the current Southeast Exit Plaza.
The Nagano-ya Shokudo building, with its striking “Lones World” sign, remains open for business. The Taiwanese restaurant “Aji-Oh” relocated nearby and continues to serve its unchanged flavors with vigor. Both are recommended for their deliciousness passed down since the Showa era.
A unique photographic archive of Tokyo’s shifting urban landscape—captured in striking before/after pairs from 1984 and the present day.

Shinjuku Station South Exit / Kōshū Kaidō 1981⇔2025

In 1981, the view from the South Exit felt wide and open, with far fewer pedestrians and much narrower sidewalks. Abandoned bicycles and motorbikes lined the roadside.
By 2025, the sidewalks had been greatly expanded and redesigned for pedestrians. The taxi stands moved to “Busta Shinjuku,” and the roadway itself became narrower.

In the days when it was “bare-faced”—a rough concrete structure gaping open in the center of the plaza before Shinjuku Station's West Exit. It serves as a ventilation shaft to circulate air for the underground West Exit Plaza and shopping arcade.
Now covered in plants, it plays a part in urban greening. Behind it, the “Meiji Yasuda Life Shinjuku Building (tentative name)” is under reconstruction. This 23-story, 128.71-meter high-rise is scheduled for completion in August 2026.

Recommendation from his teacher Daido Moriyama:
“Time has changed, people and landscapes have changed, but the time and world sensed in a photograph once taken is eternal!”

Since its opening in 1956, the theater has hosted many headliners including Hibari Misora and Saburo Kitajima, and as a song and drama theater with a full-scale round stage, it was a symbol of Shinjuku in the Showa era.The theater was closed in 2008 due to the decline in the number of visitors since 1990 and the aging of the building itself. The building was closed in 2008, and the Shinjuku Toho Building complex was completed. The group of young people who hang out in the back alleys around the area (next to the Shinjuku Toho Building = "To-Yoko") are called "To-Yoko Kids.
A unique photographic archive of Tokyo’s shifting urban landscape—captured in striking before/after pairs from 1984 and the present day.

TBS954 Radio Car, next to Washington Shoe Store, you can see the pizza parlor “Shakey's.” “Shakey's all-you-can-eat pizza”! For the Showa generation, it's something you could call the taste of youth. The thick-cut potatoes with their spicy seasoning were also a popular menu item right up there with the pizza.
When I was a rookie photographer, buying a roll of film meant running back and forth between the neighboring “Yodobashi Camera” and “Sakuraya Camera” to get it at the cheaper price. “Washington Shoe Store” has become “ABC Mart.” “Sakuraya Camera” also became “Yodobashi Camera,” and now it's “Bic Camera.” Both are in the same spot, and the business type hasn't changed, has it?
A unique photographic archive of Tokyo’s shifting urban landscape—captured in striking before/after pairs from 1984 and the present day.
