大きく変貌している渋谷。街の変化に驚く一方で、変わらぬ景色に驚くこともあります。渋谷で変わらない場所と言えば、やはり「中渋谷架道橋」（中渋谷ガード）でしょう。渋谷の裏（呑んべい横丁）と表（センター街）をつなぐトンネルで、「中渋谷ガード」という名がついたのでしょうか。
1984（昭和59)年ごろ、このエリアは西武百貨店やセンター街とは対照的に、人通りも少なく寂しい場所でした。ガードを抜けると静かな「宮下公園」と「呑んべい横丁」しかなく、通り抜ける人も少なかったのです。現在では、渋谷ミヤシタパークが完成し人通りも増え賑わっていますが、その雰囲気は1984年当時とあまり変わっていません。
東京タイムスリップシリーズ「東京の今と昔」、読者の皆様は、東京の変化に興味を持つと思いますが、私にとっては「変わらない東京も結構あるなあ」という発見も楽しいものです。建物や道路、服装は変化していますが、変わらない東京もまだまだ存在します。
Naka-Shibuya Bridge 1984⇔2024
Shibuya has undergone a great transformation. While we are surprised by the changes in the city, we are also surprised by the unchanged scenery. One place in Shibuya that has not changed is the “Naka-Shibuya Bridge” (Naka-Shibuya Guard). The name “Naka-Shibuya Guard” probably comes from the tunnel that connects the back of Shibuya (Drinking Alley) and the front of Shibuya (Center Street).
Around 1984, this area was a lonely place with few pedestrians, in contrast to Seibu Department Store and Center Gai. After passing through the guard, there was only the quiet “Miyashita Park” and “Drinking Alley,” and not many people passed through. Today, with the completion of Shibuya Miyashita Park, the area is bustling with people, but the atmosphere has not changed much since 1984.
Readers of the Tokyo Time Slip series, “Tokyo Now and Then,” will be interested in the changes in Tokyo, but for me, it is also fun to discover that there are many things about Tokyo that have not changed. Buildings, streets, and clothing are changing, but there are still some parts of Tokyo that remain the same. No matter how much developers try to “remodel” the city, there are still “unaltered corners” of the city, and I think that is what gives it life.
