新宿歌舞伎町・王城ビル 1984⇔2025

〈スカラ座1984〉の写真に目を留めてくださった、「王城ビル」三代目オーナー・方山堯さんからご連絡をいただきました。
歌舞伎町の記憶を未来へつなぐべく、方山さんは「王城ビル」を取り壊すことなく、歴史を活かしたアートイベントを次々と展開されています。
都市の画一化が進むなかで、なぜこの地で、今この時に、何をやるのか——その問いを形にする姿勢に、深く共感しました。
その熱に押されてフィルムを探したところ、奇跡的に1点だけ発見！
まずはデータをお渡ししたところ、開催中のゴダール展カフェにプリントして飾っていただけることに✨
さらにご縁がつながり、展覧会にもご招待いただきました。
ご挨拶がてら訪ねたところ、なんと未公開の屋上まで、方山さんの解説付きで「王城ビル」ツアーまで…！

Shinjuku Kabukicho · Ohjo Building 1984⇔2025
Mr. Takashi Katayama, the third-generation owner of the Ohjo Building, contacted us after noticing the photograph of the Scala Theater in 1984.To connect Kabukicho’s memories to the future, Mr. Katayama has been organizing successive art events that utilize the building’s history, rather than demolishing the Ohjo Building.
Amidst the increasing homogenization of cities, I deeply resonated with his approach of giving form to the question: Why here, why now, and what should be done?Driven by that passion, I searched for the film and miraculously found just one copy!
After sending him the data, he kindly printed it and displayed it at the Godard Exhibition cafe currently open! ✨
Our connection deepened further when he invited me to the exhibition itself. When I visited to say hello, he even gave me a tour of the Ohjo Building—complete with his commentary—including the previously unseen rooftop!The ongoing “Godard Exhibition” runs until the 31st. Please take your time to enjoy it in the air-conditioned comfort of the Ohjo Building.
