「家内喜（やなぎ）」とも書かれることのある柳は、字のとおりおめでたい木でもある。昔から魔除けや鬼門封じには柳の木が使われ、邪気を払う神聖な木とされていた。太田道灌が江戸城築城の際、鬼門となる神田川堤一帯に多くの柳を植えことにより、その後の江戸八百八町の繁栄につながったといわれている。
