「麗郷」前の道玄坂小路の向こう側に、ほんの１筋ばかり、いわゆる「恋文横丁」の名残りの袋小路があった。その頃はもう廃屋になったような家も目についたけれど、２軒だけ“米軍から流れてきたような古着”を扱う店が開いていた。

ところで「恋文横丁」というのは、正確には“恋文代筆屋”（朝鮮戦争に出征した米兵向けのラブレターを代筆する店）のあった１筋を指すもので、この「サクラヤ」や「ミドリヤ」が並ぶ小路は俗に「メリケン横丁」と呼ばれていたらしい。

Meriken Yokocho” behind Dogenzaka, Shibuya 1984⇔2023
When I was searching the web to locate the location of this photo of Dogenzaka, I came across a very informative site.

On the other side of Dogenzaka alley in front of “Reigo”, there was a cul-de-sac alley, a remnant of the so-called “Koibumi Yokocho”. I saw some houses that looked abandoned at the time, but there were only two stores that sold “used clothes that looked like they had come from the U.S. military.

By the way, “Koibumi Yokocho” refers to a street where there was a “Koibumi Daihitu ” (a store that wrote love letters for American soldiers who went to war in Korea). It is said that the alley lined with Sakuraya and Midoriya was commonly called “Meriken Yokocho.

This is a description of the very location of this 1984 photo. Today, this cul-de-sac is gone and a building stands in its place.
Asato Izumi’s “Showa 50’s Tokyo Diary” City boys’ era (Heibonsha) is an interesting book that describes the last days of the Showa era in Tokyo, intertwined with his own experiences. He describes in great detail (he remembers it well!) what it was like at the time. I thought that he is indeed an editor and a great columnist.
