1984年ごろの「新宿昭和館」。
「新宿昭和館」は1932年（昭和7）に開館。太平洋戦争時は空爆の目標になるとして取り壊されたが、戦後間もなく再建し、新東宝の封切り館としてスタートする。新東宝が倒産し一時洋画に転向したが1962年頃（昭和37）から東映任侠映画専門上映館として営業。常に3本立てで鶴田浩二や高倉健が看板を飾っていた。「新宿裏通りの映画館に集まる観客は映画よりも面白れえ。」と言われたほど任侠映画で有名だった。
昭和が終わり平成になっても「昭和館」はあったが、2002年2月に70年の歴史に幕を下ろした。
跡地に2004年３月SHOOWAKAN-BLD（昭和館ビル）が新築され、３階にミニシアター「K’s cinema」がオープン。自主製作映画、インディーズ映画を積極的にかけ、2018年にヒットした映画『カメラを止めるな!』（上田慎一郎監督）の上映第1号館だったことから以降は“インディーズ映画の聖地”とも呼ばれるようになる。

The Shinjuku Showa-kan was opened in 1932. During the Pacific War, it was torn down as a target for air strikes, but it was rebuilt soon after the war and started as a movie theater for New Toho. After Shin Toho went bankrupt, the theater temporarily switched to foreign films, but from around 1962, it began operating as a theater specializing in showing Toei chivalrous films. It was always a triple feature, with Koji Tsuruta and Ken Takakura adorning the signboards. It was said, “The audience that gathers at the movie theater in the back streets of Shinjuku is more interesting than the movies. It was famous for its chivalrous movies.
Even after the end of the Showa era (1926-1989) and the beginning of the Heisei era (1926-1989), the Showa-kan still existed, but the curtain came down on its 70-year history in February 2002.
In March 2004, SHOOWAKAN-BLD was newly built on the former site, and a mini-theater “K’s cinema” opened on the third floor. K’s Cinema is actively promoting independent and indie films, and is screening the 2018 hit film “Don’t Stop the Camera! (directed by Shinichiro Ueda), which became a hit in 2018, and since then it has been called the “sacred place for independent films.
