Ueno Station 1984⇔2021
Ueno Station, the northern gateway to Tokyo, is still the same in 2021, with no skyscrapers behind it and a wide open sky. The station building and guards still retain the same atmosphere. I miss the “Juraku-dai” restaurant that used to be on the second floor of the Saigo Kaikan. It was one of the first family restaurants that offered everything from Japanese, Western, Chinese, and sushi. The specialty of the restaurant was Saigo-don, named after the statue of Takamori Saigo in Ueno Onshi Park, which is located behind the restaurant. The restaurant was closed in 2008 due to the demolition of the Saigo Kaikan.
上野駅 1984⇔2021
東京の北の玄関口「上野駅」、2021年となっても背後に高層ビルも無く、空の広さは変わらず。駅舎もガードも変わらぬ雰囲気を残す。「西郷会館」2階で営業していた聚楽台（じゅらくだい）が懐かしい。和食、洋食、中華、寿司など「何でもあるファミリーレストランの先駆け的存在」です。店の背後に位置する上野恩賜公園の西郷隆盛像にちなんで名付けられた西郷丼が名物でした。西郷会館の老朽化による取り壊しに伴い、2008年閉店。
人も街も変わる。
でも、変わらないものもある。
何が変わって、何が変わらなかったか。
