渋谷駅が1885（明治18）年に開業し、その約2年後にできたのが、円山町（現在の神泉駅近く）の温泉銭湯「弘法湯」。その隣に併設された料亭、芸者屋「宝屋」。それが大当たりしたのをきっかけに、料亭や待合が次々とつくられ、やがて花街になりました。時代の移り変わりとともに、小料理屋、スナックも増えましたが、取り壊されラブホテルへと変貌を遂げる。

Shibuya Station opened in 1885, and about two years later, Kobo-yu, a hot spring bathhouse, was built in Maruyama-cho (near the current Shinsen Station). Next to it was a ryotei (Japanese-style restaurant) and geisha house, Takaraya. The success of this restaurant led to the construction of a succession of ryotei (traditional Japanese-style restaurants) and geisha houses, and the area eventually became a hanamachi (flower district). As time went by, small restaurants and snack bars increased, but they were demolished and transformed into love hotels.
