かつて“すっぴん”だった時代——
新宿駅西口の駅前広場中央にぽっかりと口を開けた、無骨なコンクリートの建造物。
地下の西口広場や地下街の空気を循環させるための換気口です。
今は植物に覆われ、都市の緑化の一端を担う存在に。
背後で「明治安田生命新宿ビル（仮称）」が建て替え中で、
地上23階・高さ128.71mの高層ビルが2026年8月に竣工予定。
西口再開発の中でも、換気口は残される見込み。
時代を越えて、都市の呼吸を支え続けています。
Shinjuku Station West Exit Ventilation Shaft 1984⇔2021⇔2023⇔2025
In the days when it was “bare-faced”—a rough concrete structure gaping open in the center of the plaza before Shinjuku Station’s West Exit. It serves as a ventilation shaft to circulate air for the underground West Exit Plaza and shopping arcade.Now covered in plants, it plays a part in urban greening.
Behind it, the “Meiji Yasuda Life Shinjuku Building (tentative name)” is under reconstruction. This 23-story, 128.71-meter high-rise is scheduled for completion in August 2026.
Even amidst the West Exit redevelopment, the ventilation shaft is expected to remain.
It continues to support the city’s breath, transcending the times.
