Shinjuku Station Southeast Exit 1984⇔2020⇔2025
In 1984, businessmen hurried to work from Shinjuku Station with cigarettes in their mouths. At that time, more than 70% of men were smokers, and in movies and dramas of the Showa era, smoking at work was depicted as a matter of course. Their appearance was stylish, and the cigarette smoke seemed somehow delicious, making them the object of admiration for young people. Smoking itself was a symbol of fashion.
In October 2020, the streets of Shinjuku were filled with people wearing masks due to the COVID-19 pandemic, creating a scene that felt like a new landscape had emerged.
In March 2025, the plaza at the Southeast Exit was bathed in gentle light, with cherry blossoms in full bloom, signaling the arrival of spring.
1984年、新宿駅から会社へ急ぐ咥えタバコのサラリーマンたち。当時、男性喫煙者の割合は7割を超え、昭和時代の映画やドラマでは、職場での喫煙が当たり前のように描かれていました。その姿は格好よく、タバコの煙もどこか美味しそうに映り、若者たちの憧れの的でした。タバコを吸うこと自体が、おしゃれの象徴でもあったのです。
2020年10月、新宿の街並みにはコロナ禍の影響でマスク姿の人々が行き交い、まるで新しい風景が生まれたかのようでした。
2025年3月、東南口の広場は穏やかな光に包まれ、満開の櫻が咲き誇り、春の訪れを告げていました。
