善本喜一郎さん（@kiichiro.photo）の『Tokyo Time Slip 1984 – 2020』をとても楽しんでいます。この本は、過去36年間に東京が経験した変化を反映した、魅力的なリフォトグラフィーの本です。1984年、写真を学ぶ学生だった善本は、東京を徹底的に撮影しました。
そして2020年、彼は同じ場所を同じ視点から撮影することにしました。東京をよく知る人であれば、ほとんどの景色に見覚えがあるでしょうし、かつてのその場所がどのように見えていたのかということにも興味があるでしょう。ここでは、東京の大きなパラドックスのひとつである、変化しながらも都市が「同じ」であり続けることを細部に見ることができます。

I’m really enjoying Kiichiro Yoshimoto’s @kiichiro.photo “Tokyo Time Slip 1984 – 2020”– a fascinating book of rephotography that reflects the changes the city has experienced over the past thirty-six years. As a young photo student in 1984 Yoshimoto extensively photographed Tokyo.
In 2020 he set out to photograph the same locations from the exact same vantage point. Those familiar with the city will recognize most views- and likewise be interested in seeing what these places once looked like. Here we see in the details one of Tokyo’s great paradoxes: things change, but at the same time the city remains the “same”.
Yoshimoto’s straightly-seen photographs render the city clearly, regardless of the year. Likewise, the book benefits from a clear layout, interesting captions, and a 2000 yen price tag. This is the kind of photobook that people who don’t buy photobooks, buy. I have a hunch that it’ll be very popular and end up with several print runs.
In the included text, this book also looks back at the photography world of the time. Yoshimoto states that he wouldn’t have become a photographer if he hadn’t met Nobuyoshi Araki at a book signing event in the early 80s- – Inspired, he soon enrolled in a Shibuya photo school and found himself studying directly under Daido Moriyama AND Masahisa Fukase. His memories of this time makes for a fun read- – I hope that one day an English version of this book is published.
“Tokyo Time Slip” is available at bookstores in Japan. It’s an absolute must-have for anyone interested in Tokyo. Hopefully it inspires more rephotography projects in the future.
