This is the “Shimokitazawa Station Food Market” from around 1984.
A black market formed at the north exit of the station shortly after the war. Later, it was developed as a market and called the food base of Setagaya. The alleyways with their unique atmosphere were the starting point of Shimokitazawa and a valuable place that took a long time to build.Unfortunately, it was demolished in the fall of 2017 due to aging and redevelopment associated with the undergrounding of Shimokitazawa Station.

The Inokashira Line Shimokitazawa Viaduct in 1984, with the surrounding area covered with fill.In 2016, the Inokashira Line elevated bridge construction removed the fill and created a usable space under the elevated bridge.Named “Shimokitazawa Cage,” it was opened as a pocket park during the day and anyone could come and go as they pleased. In the evenings, the space became a night market with outdoor seating for restaurants and take-out bars where people could enjoy a meal. However, the business was closed as of September 2019, as it was limited to a period of three years from the beginning.
