江戸時代、周辺の高台に役人のための武家屋敷が建てられ、9段の石垣を造ったことから「九段坂」といわれるようになりました。九段坂の上には明治初期にできた靖国神社があります。靖国神社の正面にある「高燈籠」は、明治期文明開化の一環として建てられた、いわば新江戸タワーです。夜の東京湾からも見えるほどで、灯台としても使われていたそうです。
Kudanshita, Yasukuni-dori 1984⇔2023
In the Edo period (1603-1867), samurai residences for officials were built on the surrounding hill, and a nine-tiered stone wall was constructed, hence the name “Kudanzaka” (Kudan Slope). On top of Kudanzaka is the Yasukuni Shrine, which was established in the early Meiji period. The “High Lantern Tower” in front of the Yasukuni Shrine is the so-called New Edo Tower, which was built as part of the civilization and enlightenment during the Meiji period. It is so visible from Tokyo Bay at night that it was also used as a lighthouse.
