1984(昭和59)年まで新宿には貨物駅があり、運送会社や労働者の食堂が立ち並んでいました。空を見上げれば、西口の小田急百貨店や高層ビルが遠くに。埼京線の開通と東南口改札の誕生をきっかけに整備が進み、1994年に東南口広場、1998年には商業施設「フラッグス」が完成しました。
Shinjuku Station Southeast Exit “Flags” 1984⇔2023
Until 1984 (Showa 59), Shinjuku had a freight station, lined with cafeterias for transport companies and workers. Looking up, you could see the Odakyu Department Store and skyscrapers near the West Exit in the distance.
Development accelerated with the opening of the Saikyo Line and the creation of the Southeast Exit ticket gates, leading to the completion of the Southeast Exit Plaza in 1994 and the commercial facility “FLAGS” in 1998.
かつてこの広場は、石垣に囲まれた小さな丘だった。昭和天皇即位を記念する「御大典広場」には、1928年建立の記念碑があり、戦後の闇市から続く飲食店が軒を連ねていた。 再開発により丘は削られ、記念碑は十二社熊野神社へ。飲食店も姿を消し、現在の広場が完成したのは1994年。
記憶の地形は、静かに姿を変えていく。
Once, this square was a small hill surrounded by stone walls. The Imperial Ceremony Square, commemorating the accession of Emperor Showa, featured a monument erected in 1928 and was lined with eateries that had continued from the postwar black market. Redevelopment leveled the hill, and the monument was moved to the Jūnisha Kumano Shrine. The eateries vanished, and the current square was completed in 1994.
The terrain of memory quietly changes form.
